Ten years from now you might get away with Peregrine, but I don't think you'll ever get away with Pippin! It's too closely associated with LotR.:-)

yes, don't forget...While the hype from the films will probably have died down by then, there'll still be all the die-hard fans of the books who'll instantly associate Peregrine with Pippin. (Just tested this on my boyfriend- a complete LOTR obsessive- who said Peregrine Took instantly comes to mind when he hears 'Pippin').That aside, I do like the name Peregrine

sorryCompletely mis-read your post and thought you were asking if Pippin was an ok nn for Peregrine. That'll teach me.
I think Peregrine, nn Per, could work on a RL kid, and there's always the more 'normal' sounding nn of Perry to fall back on if he dislikes Per when he's older.

I'm not a "Lord of the Rings" fan, so for me the association is falcon, but that's not a bad thing, it's a strong masculine image.
