[Opinions] Irving
So, it turns out that we have a relative in the family named Irving. He's deceased, and since we're Jewish, it's customary to honor our relatives after they've passed on. Normally, people do this by using a name that begins with the same letter as the name of someone who has died; i.e., honor a Sadie with a Samantha. I've also heard of people using the actual name or a variant of it; i.e., my mom, who is Toba after Toiba.
1. What are your thoughts on the name Irving? Irredeemably dated? Old-time classic ready for revival?
2. What about nickname Ving (I much prefer it to Irv)? What would you think if you saw a little kid named Irving? A teenager? A young adult? A grandfather?
3. Middle name suggestions?
4. Would you use Irving or another male name beginning with I? Which name(s) do you prefer to Irving that begin with I?

I really like it. I go to school with a guy called Irving, and it really suits him well.

As I said before, I already do know a teenager called Irving (he's about 17-ish). I don't like Ving or Irv as nicknames, maybe Vinnie? Usually nicknames are decided once the child is a bit older though?
3. Middle name suggestions?
I love Irving Alexander

I'd use Irving, it's lovely.

1. What are your thoughts on the name Irving? Irredeemably dated? Old-time classic ready for revival?: I love it! Prefer the spelling Irvine, because I pronounce it IR-vin and drop the g (but that's just my accent lol). I wouldn't call it dated, more rare and underused. Definitely due for a comeback!
2. What about nickname Ving (I much prefer it to Irv)? What would you think if you saw a little kid named Irving? A teenager? A young adult? A grandfather?: Hmm... not a fan of Ving OR Irv. How about Vinnie? Or simply Vin (hey if Vin Diesel can get away with it, why not?!)? I would be excited about seeing someone of ANY age called Irving, its brilliant!
3. Middle name suggestions?: Irving James and Irving Alexander are my favourites for the name (common middle names I know, but I think they're classic!)
4. Would you use Irving or another male name beginning with I? Which name(s) do you prefer to Irving that begin with I?: Irvine would be the only one I would suggest instead :-)

My family (while not Jewish any longer) has the same custom/rule about not honoring until they've passed on.
1. I think Irving's definitely due for a comeback. I've seen people with Ira on their lists, so why not Irving?
2. I think Ving is an awesome nickname option! I would think "cool!" if I met a little kid or teen Irving. As a young adult or Grandfather, I think he already fits in there.
3.
Irving James
Irving Thomas
Irving Laurence
Irving Frederick
Irving August
Irving Rex (I'm going through an "I adore Rex" phase, my apologies)
Irving Quentin
Irving Bertrand
Irving Jacoby
Irving Hollis
Irving Atticus
Irving Jude
Irving Reuel
Irving Gabriel
Irving Hugh
Irving Fiero
are a few ideas.
4. Irving's not a family name for me, so if I did use it, it would be in the middle, most likely. But Ignatius is one my list, that is a family name. Ignatius is also quite likely to get used. The only other *I* names I like are Inigo (which is related to Ignatius), Isidore (another family name)& Ishmael. But I'd only use Inigo as a possible nickname for Ignatius (along with Iggy & Nate).
Hope that helps, some! :)

Apparently I should have posted this on the "Critique Time" page
