I dislike them as full names (nicknames that is, short forms like Kate and Eliza are nice. Just nothing cutesy) but otherwise they're fine. I really like some and really dislike others. I love the nickname Ari for a girl (full name would be Arielle or Ariella). I also like it for a boy (full name, I guess).Elizabeth - no nickname. I love it in its full form. Prefer Elizabeth over Elisabeth. I know an Elisabeth who goes by Betty all of the time. Most of the others I know (they all spell it Elizabeth) go by Lizzie or Liz. If I absolutely had to use a nickname for it, I'd go with Liza (prefer it as a full name, though, as I see it more as a short form and not a real nickname). I also like Lily and Eliza but I prefer them on their own and I think Lily as a nn for Elizabeth is quite a stretch and I hate illogical nicknames.Catherine - I'd mostly call her Catherine but she'd be Cathy occasionally.Alexandra - ugh I hate that name. I hate the full name as much as all of its nicknames (I love Alexandria, though, and like most other Alex-names). Hmm I guess to avoid that ugly -andra sound at the end I'd call her Ali, pr. AH-lee most of the time.Annabelle - Belle. But I'd call her by her full name and her nickname. Margaret - Maggie. I have terrible associations with the name Margaret. Of course when I had a daughter named Margaret I'd think of her so I might be able to use it but right now I could only call her Maggie.Ella - Ariella (but I'd rather nickname her Ari)
Bella - Annabella
Lily - Lilia
Emmy - Emmeline (EM-meh-line)
Allie - Alexandria
Josie - Josefina
Lexie - Alexandria...hate that nn though

Elisabeth/ Elizabeth - Lizzie - I love it
Catherine/ Katherine - Kat or Kate
Alexandra - Lexie
Annabelle - wouldn't use one, but if I had to Anna
Margaret - Maggie and I prefer it to Margaret.Ella - nothing, it's a name in it's own right.
Bella - nothing or Isabella
Lily - nothing
Emmy - Emma
Allie - Alexandra. Most Allies I know are Alison.
Cassie - Cassandra
Anna/ Annie - nothing.
Josie - nothing or Josephine
Lexi/ Lexie - Alexa or Alexandra.Generally I am a fan of nicknames. I think they are generally inevitable. I think Emmy or Allie is maybe too informal to use on their own but most others work fine as a name on their own.

I love nicknames. I think they're great so that you can have a short version of your name or an affectionate thing to call someone. I feel rather strongly about giving my kids names that can have nicknames, and that's mostly because my own name doesn't have nicknames and I've always been disappointed by that.I'd use:
Elizabeth - Nell, Effie, Lizzie
Catherine/Katherine - Cate/Kitty
Alexandra - Alex
Annabelle - Nan
Margaret - Maggie, Mae, Mamie, MargoElla - Elizabeth, Eleanor
Bella - Annabel, Isabel
Lily - Elizabeth
Emmy - Emmeline
Allie - Allison, Alexandra
Cassie - Cassandra, but I dislike it
Anna/ Annie - Annabel
Josie - Josephine

What are your thoughts on nicknames?
~ It depends on the name and how much I like the sound of the nickname. Some names are so lovely that I couldn't imagine shortening them, such as Zipporah or Yocheved. Other names, like Evelyn or Magdalena are lovely by themselves or with nicknames. What nn would you use (or none at all) for:

I love them, and don't think I'd use a name that didn't have a nickname...but that's because my top favorites all have nicknames. I always wished I had a good nickname.(If I fell in love with a nickname-less name, that would be fine though!)Nicknames are so much fun!
Elizabeth-my favorite is Betsy♥, followed by Beth, Ella and Buffy. I hate Libby and Lizzy.
Katherine-my favorite is Kitty♥, followed by Kate and Kathy. I hate Katie and Kat.
Alexandra-I like Alexa, but don't really like this name. Don't really care for Alex, Allie, Lex, Lexi...

Alexandra - I don't think I'd use one, if I did it would be Alex
Annabelle - Anna

Lily - Don't like Lily either... Lilia probably.
Emmy - Emma or Emeline
Allie - Hate Allie... probably Alice
Cassie -
Anna/ Annie - Anna. Or Anna-Sofia (really do love this).
Josie - Hate Josie too... love Josephina
Lexi/ Lexie - Again hate this, Alexandria probably.

I prefer names that have at least one nickname that I like, and that I like the first one or two syllables as a nickname, even if I don't plan to call them that (because there will always be people who automatically shorten a name to the first one or two syllables)Elisabeth/ Elizabeth - Elsie, Lizzy, Liz, Zabby
Catherine/ Katherine - Kat, Katy, Rinny
Alexandra - I really like Alexandra, but I'm conflicted on the nicknames. I don't much like Alex or Allie, which would be inevitable, but I could warm up to it. My favorite nickname is Xandra, followed by Alexa and Sunny. I might also use Xanna or Andra. I hate Lex, Lexi. I love Xan as a nn for Alexander, but not Alexandra.
Annabelle - Belle, Bella
Margaret - Greta, Pearl, MaisieWhat fn would you use these nn's for?
Ella - Elena, Eliana, Electra
Bella - Amabel, Abelone
Lily - Liana, Liliana
Emmy - Emerald
Allie - Alcyone, Alyssa, Allegra, Althea

I like nn's a lot. As I get older and .. uhhh.. wiser? I find myself much more drawn to long, pretty girls names that come with short, spunky nicknames (which is a huge change from my tastes at age 13-14 when I joined BtN)What nn would you use (or none at all) for:
Elisabeth/ Elizabeth - Elsa (which is my favorite name on its own)
Catherine/ Katherine - Cat/Kat
Alexandra - Alex
Annabelle - Belle
Margaret - Mary (or Maisie, if you want to get adventurous) What fn would you use these nn's for?
Ella - Penelope (another favorite)
Bella - Mirabella, but I really like Bella on its own
Lily - again, I think it's fine by itself (maybe Luella)
Emmy - Amelia
Allie - hhmmm... Aliana?
Cassie - Cassandra!
Anna/ Annie - idk, I'll have to think about it.
Josie - JOSEPHINE! such a pretty name.
Lexi/ Lexie - Alexandria

What are your thoughts on nicknames? I know some people love them and some hate them. I like them, but then again I tend to love elaborate names where you almost need a nn. As long as they aren't too cutesy or obnoxious they're cool. They almost add another dimension to the name, IMO.What nn would you use (or none at all) for:
Elisabeth/ Elizabeth- Lily or Lise. I don't like Ella or Liz, etc., even though they make the most sense with Elizabeth.
Catherine/ Katherine- Cat, Kit, Catha / Katha, or Rin
Alexandra- Andra, or maybe Alex
Annabelle- Anna or Anne
Margaret- Meg or Peg! I adore Margaret nn Meg.What fn would you use these nn's for?
Ella- Elanor / Eleanor
Bella- Sabella
Lily- I like Lily best on its own, but I could use Liliana or Lileas nn Lily.
Emmy- Emmeline
Allie- Alice or Alannah
Cassie- Cassandra. Or, Cassiopeia, if I was nearly that brave.
Anna / Annie- Alannah, Adriana, Marianna / Marianne, Annabelle. Even Rhiannon- it's kind of a stretch, but I really like it.
Josie- Josephine
Lexi/ Lexie- Alexandria

Elizabeth/Elisabeth - my cousin's name is this and she goes by Liz. I prefer Liza, Elle, or Bette/Beth.Catherine/Katherine - my goddaughter's name is Lily Katherine Jane and she is, and will forever be, my Kat. 'Kit-Kat' to be exact lol. Her mother calls her Kate but I much prefer Kat as a nn for C/Katherine.Alexandra - Alex, all the way but if one wanted a girlier nn, I'd go with Xandra.Annabelle - Belle. Belle is a simple name I wouldn't mind seeing as a comeback. (Jane, too)Margaret - this is guilty pleasure for me. It's so grown-up but can be 'cutesied' with the nn's Maggie or Mollie.Ella - anything with "-ella"
Bella - anything with "-bella"
Lily - Lillian, Liliana, etc.
Emmy - Emmeline
Allie - Allison
Cassie - Cassandra or even Calista

What nn would you use (or none at all) for:
Elisabeth/ Elizabeth - Libby or Liz
Catherine/ Katherine - Kitty
Alexandra - This is my first name. I go by Ali, but if I was choosing for someone else, Sasha.
Annabelle - Ugh. I wouldn't use this name at all. If it was a choice between a nickname or this name though, either Anna or Bells is much, much better.
Margaret - GretaWhat fn would you use these nn's for?
Ella - To me, this stands on its own. If I had to pick a full name, I'd go with Ellen or Eleanor.
Bella - Sabella, just to be different.
Lily - This also stands on its own. If I had to choose a long version, I'd choose Lilya.
Emmy - Emilia
Allie - Allison. Even though my nickname is Ali for a different Al- name, Allie really only belongs with Allison in my mind.
Cassie - Cassandra.
Anna/ Annie - Fine on its own, I think (but ugh, not Annie). If I had to pick a long form, Anneliese. Or for fun, Saranna.
Josie - Josephine.
Lexi/ Lexie - Alexandra.
