[Facts] The Meaning of Belinda
Replies
Well, my fn is Belinda! Its meaning usually states that it is Italian for beautiful (and I have been told this by people, also). I also have a birthday card, you know the ones that have your name and its meaning printed on them, and it says:
"Your name means beautiful or pretty"
Other forms include:
Belle, Lynda, Belynda.
Is of old Spanish origin: Bellalinda.
Hmmm...the replies so far are interesting...names can be so complicated! LOl. Hope I helped, anyway. :)
Belle Elizabeth.

"Das grosse Lexikon der Vor- und Familiennamen" which is based on the name database from the German "Duden" company gives another possible (uncertain) origin for the first element: from Germanic badu, meaning fight, battle.
This seems to be a rather obscure word as far as given names are concerned; I could not find other names that are suspected to contain this word.
I think the probability of the theory of "bella" plus "lind" largely depends on the time when the name was coined. If it is the 17th century, as BtN cites, probably as the earliest confirmed use of the name known today, I see no problem to take an Italian and a Germanic element to build a name. If the name is much older, however, the all-Germanic theory of something like "badu" + "lind" gains probability.

What the entry means is that we can't confirm that the first element *is* the Italian 'bella' and we can't be sure *which* 'linde' is the correct one. As far as I know, there are no other suggested meanings.

I looked on google and two sites say "beautiful snake".
Another said "Pleasing on the eye, usually has a couple of good points".

Space Cadet, please don't repeat that kind of made-up garbage here. We don't do personality traits or appearances on the facts board, as those things have nothing to do with etymology (or, in fact, with names at all).
