I woke up this morning with a note from my husband on my laptop that said, "I REALLY like this for a girl name."
I don't know where he got it from, and I'm not sure how to pronounce it. I looked it up and it's not in the BtN database.
I am pretty sure the accent aigu means that it's pronounced like a long A, but I'm not sure about the second syllable.
So, since this is the first independent effort he's made towards finding a girl name, I'd like to honor it with some sincere thought. WDYT of Élan?

that's sooo sweet! I'm sorry I really don't have anything to add but I just think it's nice that he's making an effort and with such enthusiasm!

I think so too, but I'm really struggling to find a middle name combo that I love. I think it needs something really normal and really feminine to balance the unusual name Élan.
The biggest surprise is that I've polled a few members of my family, and everyone seems to like it. (And I have the kind of family that would tell me if they didn't like it.)

Élan isn't bad, but I prefer Elin which if I'm not mistaken is pronounced as AY-lin, but I've also heard it pronounced as EL-in.

It is AY-lahn, and thanks for the compliment. I made the special characters by going to http://french.typeit.org and writing the word there. Then I copy and paste into my email. There might be an easier way, but I don't know it.

If your keyboard is the same as mine, you can hold down the 'Alt Gr' key and the letter you want to accent and it'll do it.

Where's the 'Alt Gr' key? Maybe I'm an idiot, but all I see is the 'Alt' key.

I have a laptop, and I don't have that key anywhere on my keyboard.

Ah, strange that (mine has an Alt Gr key). There's always the Character Map. Click 'Start', ==> 'All Programs' ==> 'Accessories' ==> 'System Tools' and it should be in there. I'm on Windows XP BTW so it might be different on others (I can't remember).

I've never seen an 'Alt Gr' key on any keyboard - maybe it's specific to UK keyboards!

Might be as Catherine is from the UK and it was Fergus (I think) who I gt it from in the first place.

I think it's rather pretty, it does remind me of Ellen but also of Elaine. AY-lan has a pretty sound to it. Did you ask hubby how he pronounces it?
I think it would make a nice middle name for something like Gloria or Gabriella or Gretchen. :)

As a middle name maybe, but I am not sure if it is in use as an actual name - it is a word to me

It's starting to grow on me too. I've been pronouncing it AY-lan as well, and the more I say it, the more I like it. You said it's cute. Does this mean that it wouldn't age well? Can you picture an old lady named Élan?
Any mn suggestions? Our ln has two syllables, so I think something one syllable or three syllables would sound better.
I think it would sound good as a mn also. I love Nadia Élan, but DH doesn't like Nadia.
