I hold what seems to be the minority opinion that it's effeminate on a boy. Which doesn't mean that I like it on a girl, as I don't. It's one of those names that is too feminine for a boy and too masculine for a girl. Just neither nor.
Not only that, but it seems too nicknamey (on a boy, at least), because it started out as a nickname for Robert, and I'm of the opinion that if it's going to be used for a boy, it should still be used as such. On a girl, it seems that it's a bird name, but I wouldn't want to think of it as a bird name on a boy, so nickname for Robert it would be. If I really loved Robin on a boy, I'd rather name him Robert and call him Robin, so he has options later in life. As the wife of a man who decided that his childhood nickname was effeminate and chose not to go by it, I'm sensitive to those things.
