Fey is a gay slang term for "effeminate", so I wouldn't use that.

I'm not familiar with that meaning for Fey, but I am with these:http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/feyNone of them are very flattering ... I'd also stick with Fay. Or possibly Fae.

yeah, "effeminate" is exactly what I thought of too. I know a lot of people (30s and older) who have Faye/Fay as a middle name, so it sounds kind of "throw-away" to me (like Lynn, Lee, Sue, Jean, Jo etc.). I like short names, but Fay sounds like it should be short for something, even though it isn't.

Fay could be short for Faith, but I've never heard it used like that. It's the first syllable of the name, and Fe is Spanish for Faith.
I know a couple of female Fay's, and one male Faye (my dad's poor cousin).
