[Opinions] Agnes
What is your opinion of Agnes? Aggie? Any middle name suggestions? Do you think it works well on a young girl? Could you see it rising in popularity?

I absolutely adore it. It is my great-aunt's name and I love her.

I'm fond of Agnes. Aggie I've always found a bit cutesy though, despite finding Maggie spunky. I think I'd be more inclined to use Ness or Nessie as a nn then. Definitely works on a young girl, especially with the potential nns which would almost certainly find more use. And I agree with the couple of posters who have mentioned the hipster factor. I have a bunch of artsy hipster friends who all seem to want to name their daughters either Agnes, Edith or Frances. Granny revival! I think it's great. I can't see Agnes being particularly mainstream though. Matilda is here, but I can't seeing Agnes workin' it on the popularity charts any time soon.Edited to add MNsLove a lot of Chloe's suggestions.Agnes Daisy

I don't see Agnes rising in popularity. But I do love it. It's dripping with history. Agnes tends the fire and sees that everyone else is cared for while Isabella and Sophia go out on the town dancing. Agnes has sensible-shoes-chic. The nn Aggie is darling.Agnes Muriel

I really like it, though I've never sat down and made combos for it. I think it works well for any age. It's delicate but not cutesy. Unfortunately, I can indeed see it rising in popularity, especially as Aggie is very similar to a lot of the more popular current nicknames (Addie, Maddie, Gabby, Maggie, etc.)

I think Agnes is a fabulous name! It's the epitome of handsome: it's so elegant and distinguished. Aggie's alright...it's a cute pet name, but I could never saddle it onto a child for full time use. Nessa or Nessie could work as well. I can't really see it rising in popularity, except among cutting edge hipster types (think Michelle Williams and Matilda, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ramona). I definitely cannot see the country being deluged with hundreds of little Agneses. Yet it does work on a young girl because it's so novel to see it used on someone so youthful. It's like the first time I met an adorable little Alice: part of her appeal was the fact that she had this grown-up person name on her which only enhanced her precociousness. As for middle names, my favourite combo when I was planning to use Agnes was Agnes Elizabeth Jane. As for other suggestions, I would include: Agnes Penelope
Agnes Lucille
Agnes Camilla
Agnes Evangeline
Agnes Matilda
Agnes Miriam
Agnes Isabel
Agnes Catherine
Agnes Ottilie
Agnes Clementine
Agnes Victoria
Agnes Petunia

I don't like it, but I want to like it, and the reason that I want to like it is that it was my grandmother's name, so even though I don't like it, I like it when others like it.Aggie is so horrible. When I was a child, our across-the-street neighbor was named Aggie. Ugh. I never knew whether or not it was a nickname.I might rise in popularity. Who knows? It's possible. I don't have too much problem seeing it on a young girl.

I think it would be adorable on a young girl. There's currently a talented young (16 years old) US figure skater named Agnes Zawadzki. She's the 2010 US ladies champion at the Junior level. She's also the reining World Junior ladies silver medalist. Can't find anything on her middle name.

I think Agnes has great hipster appeal. It's on the same wavelength as Frances and Matilda in the growing interest in its revival.Aggie is indeed rather adorable. Very fresh and pert.To keep Agnes from being too musty, I'd pair it with something zippy and approachable, like:Agnes Poppy
Agnes Bella or Agnes Ella
Agnes Eliza
Agnes Ida
Agnes Zoe (not crazy about the s-z transition but I love the look of it)
Agnes Phoebe
Agnes Ivy
Agnes Lucy
Agnes Lily
Agnes Olivia
Agnes Hattie
Agnes Ottoline / Agnes Ottilie

Ahhh, Agnes Lucy is fantastic! I feel like it needs one more middle name to round it off but maybe that's because I'm in a two middle name phase. Totally toying with that tonight.

:DI'm so glad you enjoy. Poppy is always the first example that comes into mind whenever I think of a "zippy" name :)
