John grew up in the city of Oxford in England. His family was comfortable, yet not wealthy. John always dreamed of becoming a soldier, so when he was eighteen he signed up. The army was everything he dreamed of and he loved the adventure of not knowing where he would be going next. After completing his training, he was sent to Dublin, Ireland to help fortify an important base. He thought things couldn't become any better for him, until Jack, a friend he met on the base took him back to his home in the countryside of Dublin to spend the holidays with his family and some friends of the family. During the festivities, John met the daughter of Jack's family's friend, her name was Kathleen Rose and John was immediately attracted to her stunning red hair and green eyes. The two spent the duration of John's leave time getting to know each other and immediately fell in love.
Kathleen had a simple childhood, she grew up on a farm and received a minimal education. She was the second in a family of three daughters and never imagined she would meet anyone like John. When John returned to the base, he and Kathleen corresponded by letters and the two vowed to be together again. John's contract ended a year later and he took her back to his hometown. Despite his love for her, John's family didn't approve of Kathleen's Irish origins and humble background. They refused to include her into the family and even threatened to disown John should he marry her.
John wrote of his problems to his cousin Thomas, who had left for America the past year. He was running a hotel and promised to employ both John and Kathleen if they wished to join him in America. After marrying in a simple ceremony with only John's brother present, the two left for America. Upon arriving in New York City and being processed, they began their new life. Kathleen was hired as a chambermaid, spending her days cleaning the rooms. John did not want Kathleen to do such grueling work, but realized it was necessary. John's job was to help keep up repairs in the hotel. The work was difficult, but the couple was rewarded with a place to stay and food to eat.
