My cousin's daughter is
Malia- Hawaiian for
Maria, but his dad is from Hawaii, and is 1/4 Hawaiian (dad is 1/2 Hawaiian and 1/2 Portuguese/ Azorean), so it isn't that big of a surprise for him to use it.
Leilani Neumann is infamous as the mother in a faith healing case that was in the news. You might have seen it online, but I think only people in this area would remember it. She and her husband were charged with their daughter's death because they never took her to a hospital/ doctor for help. I don't think she had any Hawaiian blood.
I think you could use a name from another culture, but people will assume there is a connection. A lot of Hebrew names are Biblical, so are in another category. French names are similar enough to English names, and
France and English seen to have a strong historical connection- even with the wars between them- that it's no big deal.
