I was acquainted with a guy in college named Mitra (MEE-tra). I'm not sure what part of the world he was from. I liked his name, though.
Anyway it's masculine, and foreign to me (US).
If I met a girl Mitra I'd try saying it MITT-tra first because I'd think it was made up. And if she were Mitra "MEE-tra" and her parents were US-born I'd suspect that either they were ignorant about the male name Mitra, or else that I am ignorant of some usage of Mitra for girls.
