Its root is the Germanic name Mahthildis (Maud, Matilda).
The name Mahthildis came in Italy with the adaptation of the French variant Mahaut which was Macalda (today not used at all).
The variant Mafalda was borne when a Savoy Princess married a Portuguese King in the 12th century changing her name in Mafalda (the Portuguese variant).
Since that time Mafalda became a name used in the Savoy Royal Family so an Italian name.
In 2015 only five newborns were given this name.
