It's over-elaborate and pointless, like putting metres of nylon 'lace' on a piece of transparent plastic. Why bother? Presumably because it was part of the 18th century fashion for expanding, Latinising and generally mucking up ordinary names to give them a zingy modern vibe:
Maria, not
Mary,
Lucinda, not
Lucy,
Sophia people wherever you turned ... but its brief spell of spontaneous life ended centuries ago and I see no need to summon it back from the grave!
