Help[Opinions] Tallis
The name Tallis has been submitted to the database quite a few times, all deleted. (One of the submissions was mine, linking it to the surname Tallis and providing a fictional bearer, but the bearer was deemed not notable enough.) It's similar to Alice in sound, though visually more similar to Wallis. I kind of like it (for feminine usage).
Anyway, what do you think of Tallis?

It just makes me think of a prayer shawl. I say and hear tallit more often, but the Asheknazi pronunciation that my mother uses is tallis. I hear "TAH-lis" in my mind when I read it, not something that sounds like ALice with a t at the front.

Personally makes me think of talus, the word for fallen rocks piled up at the base of a cliff.

I like Tallis a lot and I'm adding it to my PNL now. Ever since I'd heard of Thomas Tallis I thought it was very natural and delicate sounding, plus I like the historical and musical association.

I think it's fairly appealing. I could imagine calling someone it, and it wouldn't be weird. It's not weirder than Hollis. (I would say the a as in talisman, not as in tall)
I don't think it's particularly feminine. Seems unisex, because it is surnamey. On a guy it would seem more old-timey to me, on a gal more modern-surnamey.

Well, there was a character on the American sitcom "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" between 1959 and 1963 and she was definitely THAY-lee-uh.
However, a great many of the girls that have been given this name in the last couple of decades in the USA are Hispanic, and the Spanish pronunciation would be TAHL-ee-ah.
So I'm afraid this is one where you have to ask the bearer how she prefers to have it pronounced.
