Carol and Carole are pronounced identically, you're right. So, why stick an unnecessary -e on to the end of Carol? To make it feminine? Then why not the admittedly awful Carola? I see Carol as no-nonsense all right, and a lot of your combos include names I like. Carol Penelope would be lovely, for instance, but Carole (with a silent -e) Penelope (where the -e is sounded) doesn't work for me.I don't know if vintage BBC radio comedy has a following in the USA: if it does, then consider The Glums. In one episode, Mr Glum is sounding off about female names he finds absurd and his final, climactic example is Carole, but he scornfully pronounces it Car 'Ole. I rest my case.
