It means “candle “ in my first language and I can’t get past that.

About a year ago Iowa Public Television (which I get on my cable TV in Omaha, since Iowa is right across the river) showed the Italian romantic comedy miniseries "Love, Inevitably" where a travel agent from Rome and a flamenco dance instructor from Seville, Spain meet accidentally in Prague, and then have the experience of seeing each other's ghostly doppelganger when they return home. The woman is named Candela, and never having run across that name before my image of a Candela is now dominated by that character, who was a beautiful but somewhat scatterbrained person (as would be normal for the heroine of a romantic comedy.)

I suppose children could be bullied about any word easily associated with a name, but I really don't see how the word "candle" would be one of the worse such words to be teased about. What could other kids say about candles that would be really hurtful?

Like Wordsmith, I prefer Candelaria! It sounds more like a name and it’s just so beautiful! But both are good though and I think Candy is fun nn.

Also I don’t see why you would bully someone for having candle in their name. What’s wrong with candles?

I like it, though it might not be well received in a non-Spanish speaking country.

I like it. I'm not sure I would like it if I didn't like Candelaria first, but I did, and Candela just seems more casual and secular than that.

I'm not bothered by it sounding like candle because it's literally a word name meaning candle. That seems like the whole point of using it.

I like it but prefer Candelaria, the full form. It’s a wintry beauty of a name!

Too close to candle

It's cheesy. Like Liberace and his candelabra.
And Candy is a cliched hooker's name. Also a three-legged dog my aunt and uncle had.

It'd be pretty if it weren't for the word candle.
