[Opinions] New Surname for Original Character
A character that I've had since 2021 needs a new surname. I've tried looking for surnames on my own, but nothing really quite works for him, so I wanted to see if any of you had a good idea. The character's name is Jackie. His surname was originally Prescott. Jackie Prescott had a good ring to it, but after creating him, I met a man with the same initials who turned out to not be a good person. I've tried to not let it bother me, but the J first name and P surname combination has become an unwanted distraction, to the point where I can't think of Jackie without thinking about this person. Since Jackie's first name is more significant to his character, I've decided that his surname needs to be replaced. For some more information about Jackie, he is of White American descent. I'd like his surname to be English, used in the United States, but not something too common like Smith or Jones or Miller. He shares his surname with his family members, so the new surname will also apply to his father Francis, mother Sarah, and younger sister Eleanor. I think Jackie's name would work well with a surname starting in a hard consonant, but I'm open to anything as long as it does not start with the letter P. Some surnames that are being used for other characters in Jackie's world include White, Jensen, Callahan, Mitchell, and Nicholson.I'd greatly appreciate your help!

It wouldn't bother me because JP is a very common set of initials. I've met JP's short for Jean-Pierre, Jean-Paul, John-Paul, etc. But if you have to change it...

I was wondering why Jackie has a nickname and other family members have full names? Is his name John, Jack, Jackson or something else? Does his first name have some significance for the family?Blythe

Yep, Jackie is a nickname. His given name is actually Jude, but he hates it because older relatives would call him Judy when he was little. His middle name is McKenzie, but he hates it even more than Jude, so he came up with Jackie as his preferred name and it stuck. Only his parents and older relatives refer to him as Jude, and since his parents aren't particularly major characters in the world he's in, for all intents and purposes, his name is Jackie. The reason I say it's more significant than the original surname is mostly because I generally call him Jackie when I write with him.
Jude is one of my favourite names for boys. Oh well, it's too bad your character doesn't like it.
If you're stuck, try giving him a different fn, which he won't use except when signing documents, because his nice new surname will be Jackson. And the nickname of course is Jackie. Andrew Jackson? Paul Jackson? Have fun!
