HelpTripoli for a girl????
A good friend wishes to name her soon to be daughter this! The middle name is a tasteful Elisabeth.
What do you think (I hate it!)?

No, because it's a World War Two battle site (I think). Does your friend really want her kid to be associated with a conflict in which millions of people were killed? Because let me tell you, her history teachers will make references to it.

It's in Lebanon....
And we're now at war with them. We're bombing them, and we are being bombed right back. They're the reason for being stuck at home all the time, the ruining of my summer vacation, and the constant booms and sirens (there was one just now). Very bad association. VERY bad. Where did she hear it - on the news? It would be so fun for her daughter to know she was named because of a war.
I don't know about similar sounding names. She can't use Tripoli, though. Shouldn't, anyway.
And btw, I don't really think Elisabeth is so tasteful with an S. It takes away the some snaz that Elizabeth has. And it looks misspelled and weak, to me. But it is wonderful compared with Tripoli.

Correction....
There may be a small town or area in Lebanon called Tripoli (but I'm not aware of one), but the real Tripoli you are thinking of is in Libya. It's the capital city on the barbary coast.

No, if you check your atlas, it *is* a city in Lebanon . . .
There is also a Tripoli in Libya, but since the Lebanese city of Tripoli has been in the news, that's the relevant one here.

However, the important thing is that most of your replies are completely anti this as a name which is what I wanted to hear. Thank you!

Is she aware of the Tripolitan war? Ask her about the gun boats. The history of that place, saturated with pirates and such, doens't make it a good namesake for me! (Note: I may be passing on any biases my history teacher pounded into my brain. It's how I'm programmed.)
The sound of it isn't half bad, but the country, and the reputation it has in history with relation to the US makes it unsuitable for me.
What about Thea? Tara? Thalia? Or even the popular alternate spelling, Talia? Theadora? Pippa, short for Phillipa tradionally, buy maybe just suggest Pippa? Tricia? Trinidad? Trina?

Yeah... I don't like place names to begin with, but this is not feminine at all. It is clumsy and tacky.
What about Penelope? It has a similar sound.

Savitri? - it's "exotic," but much prettier

If worst comes to worst, she could always go by Polly? Tripoli does sound like a kind of noodle, and the trip- part isn't very flattering. Everyone goes through some sort of clumsy stage in life, and it'd make it even worse if your name started off with "trip".

Thanks I will pass some of those on. I did suggest the wonderful Theodora at one point, as she seems fond of many T names. It was too "clunky" and "old" apparently. And the "trip" in Tripoli is attractive??

Theodora doesn't start with the same sound as Tripoli.
I don't think that Tripoli is that outrageous myself, but if you want to think of names that sound like it you should pick names that start with Tr-. Such as Trista, Tristana, Trina, Triona, Trixie, Trilby, Treva, Tryphena, Tryphosa, Tressa, or Trega. Tivoli is a similar sounding place name that I've seen given to girls several times.

I lived on a military base as a kid. Every day at school, we used to have to sing "From the halls of Montezuma". The next line, of course, is "to the shores of Tripoli".
The only name I can think of remotely similar is Trinity, but I don't care for that one much either.
