Callum and Gwen were only two months from their wedding when Callum was called back to Stonebridge. His father had had a hunting accident, resulting in the loss of both his legs below the knees, and Callum was needed at home to run Stonebridge until his younger brother Donovan came of age. This would take a year. Gwen and Callum decided to put off their wedding, a disappointment to them both, but in their eyes the best plan. Gwen was depressed for a while, until three of her siblings announced that they were all expecting babies. Lily was the first to announce. After a year of trying, she and Chris excitedly announced to everyone that they were going to have their first child. Shortly after, Mira announced that she too was expecting, and then Remus and Susanna ALSO announced that Theo was going tohavea younger sibling. The prospect of three new babies in the family practically at once roused Gwen and made her forget her own troubles as she and her sisters and sister-in-law all began preparing for new babies. Rosa and Thaddeus were especially glad to see Gwen return to herself, as it made them nervous to see active and vivacious Gwen grow despondant. But visits to Callum as well as the babies brought her back to herself.
Only just before Lily was due to give birth, tragedy struck the family. Nico, still the sweet child and grown into an adventurous one, was climbing along one of the walls of the palace to retrieve a ball for one of the palace children and fell three stories. Both his legs and some ribs were broken, and he was unconscious for two days. The entire family was horribly shaken, so much so that it sent Lily into labor. While half the royal physicians were working over the prince, the other half were working over the princess. The baby was born and the prince awoke only hours apart. As soon as she was allowed up, Lily carried the baby, a beautiful little girl the very image of her mother, into Nico's room. She and Chris wanted him to give his newest niece her first name. He chose Elizabeth, after their mother, and Lily and Christ chose Nichola after Nicholas. A month later Susanna gave birth, and they named their child Oliver Nicholas, after his last and first names. ira, who gave birth a few weeks later, named their son Edmund after him. All had realized how much sweet Nico meant to them, and how close they had come to losing him.
All the celebration of the new grandchildren was undermined for Rosa by the worries about their traditional allies, Haarlsgard. They had been trading partners for generations, but suddenly they had become restive, demanding new agreements that put almost all benefits of trade on themselves. Rosa has made concessions, though not all they demanded, hoping that will keep them happy. The last thing she wants is war, especially when Tayel has been prospering so beautifully for so long.
