Meaning & History

Possibly derived from the Greek bòthros or Latin butrium, both of which mean “moat”.

A famous bearer was Gentile Budrioli, a skilled healer who became a counselor for Bologna’s ruler Giovanni II Bentivoglio in the late 1400s. Unfortunately, she was eventually accused of witchcraft, leading to her execution in 1498.
