Meaning & History
From Old French maillot ‘big mallet’, used as a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked with such an implement, e.g. a smith, and perhaps also as a nickname for a fearsome warrior (see English Mallett). This is the usual form of the surname in France (it is, however, most frequent in Réunion), while in North America it is normally spelled Mailhot.possibly also a habitational name from Le Maillot or Maillot, the name of several places in various parts of France. Compare Mayott, Mayotte, and Myott.
