Meaning & History

Some characteristic forenames: Scandinavian Erik, Niels. German Manfred.

Danish, Norwegian, and North German: from krage ‘collar’, either a metonymic occupational name for a maker of collars or a nickname for someone who wore a distinctive collar. Collars were worn by wealthy people, and in Denmark at least this also seems to have been a nickname for a nobleman or a courtier.
