Meaning & History
Abkhaz name derived from Arabic لَاحَظَ (lāḥaẓa) meaning "to notice, to look" combined with بَهِيجَة (bahīja) meaning "delightful, joyous" (see Bahija). The spellings were altered by historical changes in the Abkhaz language, and the name was traditionally used to refer to descendants of ancestors named "Lavahiz" and "Bahija".
