Meaning & History

From the medieval female personal name Maudeleyn, the English form of Greek Magdalēnē, the sobriquet in the New Testament of the woman Mary who was cured of evil spirits by Jesus. It means literally "woman from Magdala", the name of a village on the Sea of Galilee. The surname was borne by British Conservative politician Reginald Maudling (1917-1979).
