Meaning & History

Means "orange (colour)" in Dutch, in reference to the Dutch Royal Family, who in turn derive their name from the town of Orange (or Auranja) in France, first attested as Arausio in the first century. It was likely named for the local water god Arausio, and later conflated with the word for the fruit and colour.
