Meaning & History
Means "hero, champion, athletic, strong man", a variant of Pahlavan. It could also refer to a person who came from Parthia, a historical region situated in present-day Iran and Turkmenistan, derived from Persian پهلو (pahlaw) meaning "Parthian, person from Parthia". This name is borne by members of the Pahlavi dynasty that ruled the Imperial State of Iran from 1925 until they were overthrown during the Iranian Revolution in 1979. One of the most famous members of the Pahlavi royal family was the last monarch of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi (1919-1980), more commonly known as Mohammad Reza Shah or simply The Shah.
