As far as I've researched the name dates back to a man by the name of Count Palatine Kuno von Rott (~1083). After he got land from the Pfalzfrafs which seem to be a nobile family line.There also used to be a Rott region of France/Germany and there is now a city called Rusthorf a. d. Rott as well as an area in upper Bavaria.
