Meaning & History
Derived from the town Trezzo sull'Adda in northern Italy, the name di Trezzo was used by a Milanese armourer family of the 14th century with the first known member being Bazarino di Trezzo, who was possibly also related to the Missaglia family of armourers. Konrad Treytz the Elder germanized the name when he left Italy to become an armourer at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor in Innsbruck around the 1460s. In the late 16th century members of the family moved to southwest Germany, where the spellings Treuz, Treyz, Treutz and Treitz were derived. Jakob Trites, a member of the Swabian branch of the family, anglicised his name when emigrating to the USA in 1749 and later to Moncton, Canada in 1776. Etymologically, the place name Trezzo is most likely derived from the Lombard Germanic word trecc meaning "promontory/spit of land" of which a especially strategically important one is located at Trezzo sull'Adda.
