Meaning & History
Værnes is a village in the municipality of Stjørdal in Nord-Trøndelag county in Mid-Norway. The original spelling of the village's name was Vannes and it is a combination of var "calm, quiet" and nes "headland". The spelling was changed to Værnes when Norway was under Danish rule. The surname can be derived from the name of the village. Or it could be a combination of Old Norse veðr "weather" and nes "headland". Vær also means "to be, to exist" in Norwegian.
