Other Forms FormsZoccoli, Zoccolo, Zoccolella, Zacollo
Meaning & History
Possibly derives from a dialectic variant of zoccolo "clog (shoe with wooden sole); hoof (of an animal)", perhaps a nickname for someone who made or often wore such shoes, or for a mountaineer. Alternatively, it could be taken directly from zoccola meaning "sewer rat" or "whore, prostitute". There are several records of foundlings and infants of uncertain parentage being given this as a surname.
