Meaning & History
English from Middle English doke "duck", hence a nickname for someone with some fancied resemblance to a duck, or an occupational name for someone who kept or hunted ducks. Alternatively, a variant form of Duke. Sometimes used as an English equivalent of Lohan (an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Leocháin "descendant of Leochán") by mistranslation, as if from lacha "duck".
