Meaning & History

Possibly from a Hutsul (Rusyn) dialectal word meaning "intriguer". Alternatively, it could be from the Greek headdress, of which's name derives from φάριο (phário), meaning "lantern, beacon". It could also possibly come from the village Fariony (Фаріони) in the Yavorivska rayon, L'viv. Iryna Farion (1964-2024) was a Ukrainian ultranationalist politician who was assassinated.
