Meaning & History

Meaning unknown. Proposals include french flamme meaning "flame" or a description of origin, such as "Flemish", or the French term for the same word, Flamand.

Nicolas Flamel (c. 1330-1418) was a French scribe and manuscript seller. After his death, rumors spread of him having been an alchemist, and most notably of him creating the philosopher's stone, which supposedly had many fantastical properties, such as turning base metals such as lead or mercury into gold or silver, or making people immortal. Many people claimed that he himself achieved immortality through the stone. In reality, he may have only dabbled in alchemy, and these claims did not appear until the 17th century, 200 years after his death.
