The oldest currently known use of the surname in history was for a Polish-Lithuanian noble Kazimieras Stungevičius who lived circa 1667 within the village of Stungaičiai in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 2019 Stungaičiai is located in the Silale District Municipality of Tauragė County, Lithuania. The ending of the surname evičius denotes a Polonization of the root of the surname Stungis. The Polish translation of the Stungevičius surname is Stungiewicz. The Stungiewicz family name was heraldically adopted into the Pobog heraldic clan which itself was a participant in the Union of Horodlo in the year 1413.
