The island of Ameland belongs to the province of Friesland. Buren is also the name of a small city in a Dutch province named Gelderland. The former countess Anna van Buren married William of Orange, the founder of the Dutch royal family. The current family still uses the title Count of Buren. A famous bearer of this surname was the American president Martin van Buren (1782-1862), who was the eighth President of the United States.
