[Opinions] Character Names Needed, Theme: Wild West / Pioneer
I'm writing a story based on 4 best friends set in the American Wild West, think early 1800s Oregon Trail era.
I've got a few ideas for names, but I live in an area that likes trendy names so I might be off target. Let me hear your opinions!
Give it your best shot with male & female names (got to name their families as well), possible surnames, and maybe a few kooky names for the town nut or the horses.

So for men a lot of classical French & Old Testament names, for women Biblical names. Many Phebe’s, but none Phoebe’s! Also many Millie’s, Nancy’s and Harriet’s.

I dimly remember encountering the names of two brothers in your place and time: Zeke and Moose! No doubt both nicknames, but still possible.
Maybe it was a misspelling of Mose; that's a very Wild West name. I had a great-great uncle by that name.
It was on the radio, and I was a preschooler! So I really can't say a sensible word about it.

Did you know there’s a popularity list for the US in the 1880s? It might be useful :) https://www.behindthename.com/top/lists/united-states-decade/1880
Yes! Thank you! I completely forgot about those lists.
Plus I wanted to see what wacky combinations people came up with. 😋

Nickname-names were very popular for women.
Mattie
Jennie or Jenny
Nelly or Nellie
Sadie
Hattie
Lillie (a nickname for Elizabeth)
Jessie
Maggie
Sally
Annie
Minnie
Bessie
Ella
Emmy
Carrie
Pearl
Gertie
Belle
They might have been short forms for longer names, but often they weren't.
For men, Biblical names would probably work well, though maybe not the ones that are super popular nowadays. Pick something with an "antique" feel.
Ezekiel "Zeke"
Jesse
Hosea
Amos
Levi
Moses
Abraham
Silas
Asa
Elias
Lemuel
Abner
Also stuff like Boyd, Wade, Lorenzo, and Alonzo have an Old West feel for sure.
