I think it is greek. I wonder if it is similar to the italian surname MESITI (Messitis?) coming from calabrian greek dialects.
Mesiti means in regional italian "middleman"Somebody will explain better than me.

In fact there is a popular Greek song called...Misirlou ("the girl from Eqgypt"), whose twangy US adaptation bacame the soundtrack of "Pulp Fiction" :)
