Blackadder

Habitational name for someone who lived near the Blackadder Water or near the Blackadder House, from Old English blæc "black" and an uncertain second element. There are multiple theories for what the second element is; it could be from Old Irish fota "long, far" combined with dobur "water, river", or from Old English ædre "channel of liquids, river", or from Proto-Brythonic *edir "possibly a name of a river".

Famous bearers of the name are Edmund Blackadder, a single name given to a collection of fictional characters who appear in the English comedy series 'Blackadder', all played by Rowan Atkinson, as well as Scottish Presbyterian Covenanter preacher John Blackadder (1615-1685).
