Occitanian byname meaning ""billy-goat"" see: Vulgar Latin "cabritus", from "cabrire" from older Latine "caper". Notable bearers inlcude 12th-13th century Provençal nobleman Gui de Cavalhon, known as the character of "Cabrit" in the poem "Cabrit, al meu vejaire" of which he is co-author, along with Ricautz de Tarascon. He is likely also the troubadour composer and poet "Guionet". Astruc Cabrit is listed in the index of known Jews in late-mediaeval France in Rabbi Heinrich Gross' book "Gallia Judaica".
