Meaning & History

The surname "Dycian" is quite rare, with limited information available regarding its origin or meaning. One suggestion proposes that it may derive from the German word "dicyan," meaning "cyanogen," a chemical compound. However, this interpretation lacks widespread verification. Leon Dycian (Hebrew: ליאון דיציאן, born on 17 November 1911 - died on 1 March 1984) was a former Jewish-Israeli politician and Knesset member of the Likud party who served between the years 1974 and 1977, is one of the very few examples known to bear this last name. Leon was born in Janów, which was part of the Russian Empire in 1911 and is now in Poland, so it's plausible that the surname has Eastern European roots. However, without more concrete evidence, the exact etymology remains uncertain.
