Meaning & History

A habitational name from Grandson on Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

The first known bearer of the surname was Rigaldus de Grancione (flourished 1040). Savoyard knights Otho de Grandison and his brothers William de Grandison (1st Baron Grandison) and Henri de Grandson, sons of Pierre, Lord of Grandson and Agnes Neufchâtel, brought the surname to England. Later bearers include Peter de Grandisson (1335, Wiltshire), Roger Graundisson (1397, Yorkshire), and John Grandison (1292-1369), who was appointed Bishop of Exeter in 1327. Stretton Grandison is a hamlet in Herefordshire, England.
