Meaning & History
habitational name from any of several places called Halton in Cheshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Lincolnshire, Shropshire and Buckinghamshire. Halton is usually from Old English halh "nook, hollow" and tun "enclosure, settlement". Halton in Cheshire, however, is possibly named from an Old English hathel "heathery place" and tun, and Halton in Northumberland from an Old English haw "look out" and hyll "hill" and tun.
