Notes from Daniel Satten (1896-1972) say that Mordechai Block (1797-) returned to Russia (Latvia) with the surname Schattenstein. It is not clear where he went or why it was changed. Schottenstein and Schattenstein may have originated from the same family, as when the family moved from Poland to Lithuania, one side went to the South West (The modern Schottenstein line) while the other side went to the North East (The modern Schattenstein line).
