Meaning & History

From German Schottland, 'Scotland' and, in some cases, denoted an immigrant from Scotland or Ireland. Numerous Irish fled to continental Europe after the Anglo-Norman invasion in the 13th century.
In the Dutch city of Rotterdam, it is believed that a a result of historic trading links, thousands or perhaps even 1 million of the city's residents have Scottish ancestry.

As a Jewish surname, it is most often an ornamental name.
