Meaning & History

Means "from Nistelrode", a small village in the province of Noord-Brabant in the Netherlands. It is derived from Middle Dutch nest meaning "nest, burrow, resting place" and lo meaning "light forest", combined with rode meaning "land cleared of trees". This name is borne by the Dutch former soccer player Rutgerus van Nistelrooij (1976-), better known as Ruud van Nistelrooy.
