Anglicized variant of German and Yiddish 'Weinhaus'. From German wein, 'vine, grapevine' and haus 'house, building, home', likely indicating a house with a vineyard. In the England and Wales 1891 Census, this name was found exclusively in the London area. This name also seemed to be present in Scotland in the mid-19th century. This was the surname of English-Jewish musician Amy Winehouse (1983-2011), whose family were of a Russian-Jewish extraction.
