From Chinese 邬 (wū), which is said to originate from the name of a fief in modern-day Yanshi County, Henan Province, granted to a descendant of the Yellow Emperor. It was also the name of a fief now in Jiexu City, Shanxi Province, granted to the descendants of Wu Zang, an official in the State of Jin.
