Meaning & History
Perhaps derived from Huanxiong (黄熊), a name for the Chinese folk hero Fuxi (the name literally means "yellow bear") or from Youxiong (有熊) a name for the Yellow Emperor Huangdi, a legendary Chinese emperor and folk hero. Alternatively, it may trace its origins to the Shang Dynasty from figure named Yuxiong (鬻熊) or Yuzi, an early ruler of the Chu state of the Zhou
dynasty. As a stand-alone character, 熊 (xióng)
means "bear" in Chinese.
