Joseph and Maria Elisabeth had barely returned from visiting Adelheid in France when the Dowager Queen passed away. Joseph, who had always been very close to his mother, was devastated. His moods darkened and for the first time in their nearly ten-year marriage, Maria Elisabeth saw her bright and active husband truly sad. He withdrew from his family and would go riding for hours alone. Not even his prized son made him smile in that dark time. Their family, so recently brimming with happiness, was suddenly gloomy. Without Joseph's smile and laughter, it was like the sun had been taken out of Maria Elisabeth's life.
Arthur was valiant in the face of the tragedy, sharpening his father's sword and training and studying harder than ever trying to impress his father. Princess Elisabeth, who has been growing into a calm and dignified young princess and who now spoke French very prettily, spent much of her time with her cousins Katarina, Juliana, and Hannelore, working on the altar cloth that would be used in their grandmother's funeral. Aloisia has turned out to be terrible with a needle, but quite a talented singer and musician. She sang several hymns with the choirs during the funereal processions. Johanna and Romy are too little to understand what is going on with their parents and burble contentedly as their mother and nurses take care of them.
The funeral came and passed, but the king's younger brother was still distant. Worried about her husband, Maria Elisabeth turned to her sisters-in-law to find a way to cheer Prince Joseph. With Adelheid and Magdalena both at court, Maria Elisabeth was hopeful they could find a way to bring their cheerful outgoing prince back to himself. They tried everything they could think of - feasts with Joseph's favorite foods, tournaments, falcons - but nothing seemed to help. Walter spoke with his younger brother, but though Walter said that Joseph seemed well, just sad, he remained faraway, even staying nights at his hunting estate or in his childhood chambers rather than with Maria Elisabeth.
One night, a few months after the Queen had passed away, Maria Elisabeth was sleeping alone when she heard the doors to the bedroom quietly open. The princess was frightened and clutched the blankets close to her, unsure of what to do without Joseph there to protect her. When the intruder pulled back the covers on the far side of the bed and slid into the bed, Maria Elisabeth nearly fainted in fright. He lay still for a moment and then whispered her name softly.
It was Joseph! Maria Elisabeth let out a great sigh of relief, when Joseph was suddenly holding her tightly and laid his head on her shoulders. His strong frame shook with sobs and Maria Elisabeth just rubbed his back and let him cry. After that night, things began to get better and in a few weeks, he was smiling and taking joy in his family again. With the renewed happiness in their family, Maria Elisabeth soon conceived again, once again at similar times as her sisters-in-law. When she gave birth, Joseph was thrilled to find himself with another son! He loves his beautiful daughters, but is overjoyed at the newborn boy. They named the newest prince Joseph and Anton after his father, and reused Arthur's middle name, Elias, to once again honor the late Dowager Queen. They call the little boy Sepp.
Arthur is a bit jealous of the new boy in the family, since before he was always the cherished son. Joseph is committed to making both of his sons feel equally important in their father's eyes, unlike his own childhood and that of poor little Prince Max, whom Joseph has begun to feel sorry for. Joseph is a bit unhappy with his elder brother for treating his second son and his wife with so little respect in the past several years. He and Magdalena have discussed the matter thoroughly, since Joseph was unaware that Fritzi was Walter's son until Eleonore was brought to reside at Court. Now that Adelheid is here at Court, there are again whispers of royal infidelity, but Joseph does not dare bring it up to Walter or Adelheid. Walter, he supposes, did not get as lucky as he or Magdalena and is after all entitled to his dalliances as king. Besides, if the French king is anything like his little Dauphin, Joseph doesn't blame his younger sister for finding better company for her bedchamber.
