Meaning & History

Krochmal (Yiddish: קראָכמאַל, Hebrew, קרוכמל/קרוכמאל) is a rare Ashkenazi-Jewish-Polish surname meaning "laundry starch" (a starch solution in water used to whiten and stiffen fabric). The surname was also present among Jews in Ukraine. The origin of the name is from the German word "kraftmehl," meaning "starch." Notable people with the surname include:

●Menachem Mendel Krochmal (c. 1600 – January 2nd, 1661), a great Polish-Moravian rabbi and leader of the central-eastern Jewish communities of Europe.
●Nachman Krochmal (February 17th, 1785 – July 31st, 1840), Galician philosopher, theologian, historian, and rabbi. He was one of the founders of the (in German) "Wissenschaft des Judentums" (English: "Science of Judaism", Hebrew: "חכמת ישראל", literally in the Hebrew expression means "Wisdom of Israel"), a nineteenth-century movement premised on the critical investigation of Jewish literature and culture, including rabbinic literature, to analyze the origins of Jewish traditions.
●Abraham Krochmal (c. 1817 - 1888), Galician publicist, scholar, and writer. He was a member of the nineteenth-century Jewish Enlightenment movement in Eastern Europe. He was the son of Nachman Krochmal.

Few families today are known to have the surname, with those that are known primarily living in the United States, Israel, and Australia.
